How efficient is your business?

Despite increased awareness of carbon reduction targets, and decarbonisation strategies, most businesses simply do not have access to the data allowing them to understand, and accurately measure their energy consumption.

This means that the majority of business owners, have no idea how efficient, or ‘green’ their operation is. This is where the Energy Monitoring System (EMS) comes into play.

An EMS is market leading technology, providing unparalleled, real time insight into energy  consumption. Unlike previous products, this machine gives access to immediate information from behind the meter, enabling business owners to identify areas of wastage and potential savings.

The hospitality industry relies heavily on energy in its day to day operations.

From hotels and restaurants to manufacturers in the supply chain – every cog in the wheel is using vast amounts daily. If this is not managed correctly, or the business is on an inappropriate contract for their operation, this can be very costly to the bottom line.

While most would agree that efficiency and carbon reduction is high on their business’s priority list, most also don’t know where to start when it comes to making reductions.

At The Green Energy Advice Bureau (GEAB), they live by the motto “you can’t manage what you can’t measure”. They believe that without the knowledge of where your energy is being used, there is no way to effectively employ strategies to reduce it. The EMS provides the insight to make the necessary changes in employee behaviour and business strategies.

One of GEAB’s customers, an EFL club, has been using the EMS for just over a year now. After the initial consultation, GEAB was able to commit contractually to a 10% reduction in consumption – they are on the journey to achieving this now.

“The club asked us to implement EMS in various sections of their stadium, due to spiralling energy costs they want to ensure they knew what was consuming this energy, but more importantly for every pound spent they were seeing a return of investment across their business estate.  By implementing the EMS this allowed them to understand when key pieces of equipment were being left on during quiet times with no real need or benefit to the organisation.  They rolled out a more robust switch off process and have seen a decrease in their energy consumption in these key areas by 20% resulting in lower costs for the organisation.  This has enabled them to roll this product out in other areas to identify further savings in the future.”

What’s more, the EMS doesn’t only monitor energy consumption, it also measures and tracks water usage and wastage.

Within the hospitality industry, many sectors are calling for ways to reduce their water bills.  The hotel industry, for example, uses millions of gallons of water on a daily basis just washing towels (many of which haven’t been used more than once). If you think about the touch points for each customer including showers, cleaning, restaurants, bars, washing and drying, you realise that the potential for wastage, and consequently savings, is massive.

An EMS can manage the consumption of each tap in the building, helping you identify where every drop (and every penny) is spent. Making even the smallest adjustments can mean massive annual savings, and help your business operate in a more environmentally friendly way.

“Businesses have started to become more aware of their fluctuating energy costs since the last crisis, and most are putting some steps in place to alleviate any unnecessary shocks.  However, many still don’t understand where the commodities of electricity and gas are actually being consumed in abundance across their business infrastructure.  Within hospitality the same can be said about water consumption, although this doesn’t impact finances in the same way as gas or electric, if not managed in the correct way it can still have an impact on the bottom line for these businesses, and more importantly on our environment as well.”

GEAB offers the EMS capex free to businesses, meaning that you don’t have to make the financial investment to help your business go greener.

They also allocate an account manager for every business, with regular check-in points to make sure you’re on track for the guaranteed savings.

The process to install and EMS is simple:

  1. 1

Pick up the phone and call GEAB to speak to one of their experts for a free consultation. [NUMBER]

  2. 2

If you decide that the EMS is the right product for you, GEAB will send an account manager to your site to carry out the initial assessment. At this point, GEAB will ascertain your current activity and savings potential. This assessment and consultation is free, and carries no obligation to install the EMS.

  3. 3

Once you have agreed the plan, GEAB will book the EMS installation and handle this process for you. This installation is also capex free, so there truly are no upfront costs – only savings.

  4. 4

GEAB will carry out regular reviews of your meter readings / reductions plan to make sure you’re on target. This allows for adjustments to be made regularly based on the data collected.

  5. 5

GEAB will teach you to read the data and understand the information captured, so that you can operate independently.

  6. 6

GEAB will be on hand during the lifetime of your contract. You will always have an expert to guide you through queries, concerns or adjustments.

GEAB believes that a comprehensive approach to utility management is the best way to make the smartest, cost-effective decisions. That’s why they’ll also offer you a free, no-obligation bill validation service, so you can check that you’re on the right gas and electricity contracts for your needs.
